FOCOS USA Board

The FOCOS USA board consists of 11 members. Each member supports FOCOS through bringing years of professional experience to board meetings alongside financial donations or in kind gifts.     

Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei
 

Dr Boachie is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Scoliosis Service and Associate Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Boache-Adjei is Chief of the Scoliosis Service, Hospital for Special Surgery with special expertise in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis and spine reconstruction in both adult and pediatric patients.

He was also elected President of the Scoliosis Research Society for the 2008-2009 year.

He is the founder and president of F.O.C.O.S. and has helped provide orthopedic medical care to under served populations in West Africa and other third world nations.


Anna Boutzalis

Anna Boutzalis is an accounting firm in Garden City that offers auditing and bookkeeping. Anna Boutzalis is a certified public accountant.

Jerry Callaghan
Since his retirement in 1998 after a 30-year career on Wall Street, Mr. Callaghan has been a private investor; the Chairman of Legent Clearing Corporation of Omaha, Nebraska; and a board member of several non-profits, including the American Ireland Fund, NARSAD and IMHRO.

At Lehman Brothers, Mr. Callaghan was Chief of Operations and Technology from 1991 to 1998. He was also a member of the Lehman Brothers Operating and Management Committees.

Prior to joining Lehman Brothers, Mr. Callaghan was President of two divisions of American Express; Securities Information Group (SIG) and Securities Processing Group (SPG).

Mr. Callaghan previously was a general partner at Bear Stearns as well as a member of both its management and operating committees. He held senior positions at Bear Stearns from 1975 to 1988, when he retired from the firm to work as a full-time volunteer at Covenant House, a non-profit organization for troubled young people. Prior to joining Bear Stearns, Mr. Callaghan held senior positions at Industrial Bank of Japan, Lynch Jones & Ryan and Coopers & Lybrand.


Rocco Iacoviello
Rocco Iacoviello is a partner of Mango and Iacoviello, LLP. He is a graduate of St. John’s University and St. John’s School of Law. He is admitted to practice law in the State of New York and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts.

Mr. Iacoviello represents several prominent Manhattan medical practices. He also sits on the board of a number of charitable foundations and is a member of the New York State Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association and Columbian Lawyers Association. 


Dr. Michael Mendelow
Dr. Mendelow is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. He graduated from Duke University. After obtaining his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in 1990, he completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Michigan in 1995. He continued his education at Vanderbilt University, finishing a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery in 1996.

Dr. Mendelow has, since 1996, practiced primarily in the Detroit area, including ten years at Children's Hospital of Michigan and as a clinical assistant professor on the faculty of Wayne State University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. 

Dr. Boachie, a mentor to Dr. Mendelow, invited him to participate in the development of FOCOS, and he has been a member of the FOCOS Board of Directors from 2000. Dr. Mendelow has represented FOCOS in multiple activities over the years, with work in Ghana, Barbados, and, more recently, Kenya , and Ethiopia.

Dr. Mendelow was among the early adopters of the Ponseti method of clubfoot management in the United States, outside of Iowa. He has since been inspired and committed to bringing this "gold standard" for clubfoot care to children in Ghana.


Sam Owusu-Akyaw
Sam Owusu-Akyaw served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Osteotech, Inc., a biologics company, from January 2006 to November 2010. Formerly, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer, and a member of the Board of Directors from July 2004 to January 2006.

Prior to joining Osteotech, Inc., Mr. Owusu-Akyaw served as General Manager of Medtronic Midas Rex and Vice President of Medtronic, Inc. from 2000 through June 2004, and Chief Operating Officer of Medtronic Midas Rex from 1999 to 2000.

Mr. Owusu-Akyaw was Vice President of Operations of DePuy-Acromed, a Johnson & Johnson Company, from 1998 to 1999 and Vice President of Acromed, Inc. from 1996 to 1998. Mr. Owusu-Akyaw was Vice President, BMS Productivity for Growth Initiative of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company from 1994 to 1996.

From 1977 to 1994, Mr. Owusu-Akyaw served in positions of increasing responsibility with Zimmer, Inc., then a subsidiary of Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. Mr. Owusu-Akyaw has a B.A. degree in accounting and computer science from Manchester College and an M.B.A. in finance and operations from the University of Houston.


Joanne Ronson

Joanne Ronson's education background is in business and communication with areas of expertise in finance and organizational management. For the past 20 years she has owned an international trading company specializing in the manufacturing of chemical fibers. Countries of concentration are Italy, Spain, Korea and Japan. She has also work as an independent marketing consultant and day trader.

She was a patient of Dr Boachie-Adjei’s and considered herself fortunate to have received such excellent care that she asked him, “what can I do to help someone else?”. She made the first donation to FOCOS and was named the “First FOCOS Angel”. She was a founding Board of Director serving on the Finance Committee and has been the Annual Gala Chair for the past 4 years.

Joanne is also a Board of Director at the Alzheimer’s Association, NYC Chapter, serving on the Program and Development Committees. She was a past Co-President at Hadassah, Atid Group, serving on the Fundraising Committee and volunteers with several animal organizations in New York City and Long Island.


Bettye Wright

Bettye Wright is a retired Physician Assistant and nurse from Detroit, Michigan.

Her relationship with FOCOS began 1998 when she accompanied Dr. Boachie to do cases at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. After retiring from Rochester Hills Orthopedics in 2007, her time in Ghana increased.

She travel’s to Sierra Leone annually to assist in the follow-up of post-operative patients and initial assessments of potential new surgery patients. She also assists with the coordination of FOCOS trips and foreign patients and assists with patient care in Ghana.

 


Pamala Lupo

Pamala Lupo, CO went to Michigan State University in East Lansing to pursue a degree in hotel and restaurant management. While there, she was introduced to Orthotics. Lupo went to Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, in 1980 and became a certified orthotist in 1984. She specialized in pediatric orthotics at Wright & Filippis until 1996, when she became director of orthotics, post-mastectomy care, and also became the director of the orthotic residency program. She is a member of the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA) Coding Committee and speaks to a variety of professional audiences about the field of orthotics.

 


Joseph Feinberg

Dr. Joseph Feinberg is a Associate Attending Physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery and a Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College.

He obtained a MD from Albany Medical College. He completed his residency training at NYU Medical Center (Rusk Institute). He received fellowships in orthopaedic pathology at Hospital for Special Surgery and in orthopaedic biomechanics at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Feinberg travels to Ghana regularly to treat patients with orthopaedic and neurological disorders.


Andrew Cohn

Andrew Cohn was born in Great Neck, NY, but after attending and graduating from University of Arizona from University of Arizona in 1984, migrated to Phoenix, AZ.

Mr. Cohn joined Levine Investments Limited Partnership in March 2003 as Director of Real Estate. Primary functions include acquisition, disposition and evaluation of real estate holdings. Additional duties include day-to-day operations of Levine Investments LP.

Mr. Cohn also plays an active role in several companies owned or controlled by Levine et al, including Global Water Resources, a public company. Prior to this time, Mr. Cohn was Vice President of Samuel & Company, a real estate holding company domiciled in the State of Washington and headquartered to Phoenix, AZ.

In addition to the real estate component of Samuel and Company, Mr. Cohn oversaw the day-to-day operation of two operating businesses. This engagement continued over a 12 year period.

Prior to this, Mr. Cohn was employed by Oscar Shiell & Associates, a real estate brokerage entity, which Mr. Cohn later acquired.

Mr. Cohn has held valid real estate and broker’s licenses and has been a registered property tax agent in the State of Arizona in excess of 25 years. Additionally, he presides over mediation and arbitration proceedings.

Mr. Cohn was appointed by Mayor Phil Gordon of Phoenix to sit on the Aviation Advisory Board a 4-year term and with his wife is a board member of many charitable organizations including the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC.

Andrew Cohn is married to his wife, Amy, of 24 years. Together they have two children: Matthew, age 19 and Alexa, age 22.
