ABOUT FOCOS 

Mission
To make optimal surgical and non surgical care of disabling musculoskeletal problems including complex spine and pediatric orthopedic disorders available in developing nations.

Vision
To develop a sustainable infrastructure and network through which volunteers and donors can efficiently and consistently, carry out our mission.

Goals

  • Implement effective fundraising programs to generate resources to achieve our mission.
  • Conduct orthopedic evaluative services and treatment programs at the FOCOS clinic in Ghana.
  • Consult with, educate and equip health care providers in developing nations (e.g. participating in the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons post graduate program of specialists training and professional development)
  • Facilitate fellowship training of qualified physicians and surgeons from developing nations.
  • Promote clinical research into epidemiological, natural history and treatment outcomes of Spine disorders and other musculoskeletal conditions in developing nations.
  • Develop a database of international volunteer orthopedic surgeons and healthcare professionals who are committed to participate in FOCOS programs abroad.
  • Partner with Orthotic, prosthetic and orthopedic implant manufacturers to establish FOCOS orthopedic institute, at the campus of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ghana Medical school provide materials, equipment, and training to Local personnel at FOCOS facilities abroad.
  • Initiate a sustainable "Clubfoot Project", which will adapt the "Uganda Clubfoot Project" to Ghana
  • Implement scholarship programs, especially for needy young patients in developing nations who have had complex orthopedic procedures.


Objectives
  • An international program dedicated to treating orthopedic, spine and rheumatic conditions from infancy to adulthood in underserved countries
  • To establish an Orthopedic and spine care institute in Ghana, and provide complete Orthopedic and spine care for West Africa. Such a tertiary care center will include comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facilities
  • The Foundation intends to purchase the necessary equipment to manage musculoskeletal disorders, and will accept donations from benefactors in monetary and/or material form
  • The Foundation sponsors and conducts forums. Such forums will be conducted and attended by Orthopedic surgeons and specialists in musculoskeletal disorders and rheumatology to exchange information about research, surgical applications, and other developments in treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. The multidisciplinary team will include Orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, anesthesiologists, general and vascular surgeons, medical intensivists, radiologists, physiatrists, nurse case managers, occupational and physical therapists, and research associates
  • To cooperate with other international centers and specialists to establish post graduate training programs
  • A comprehensive diagnostic imaging, orthotic and prosthetic center in Ghana to include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT scan
  • Other ancillary services will include general laboratory, pathology, social and nutrition services, and an audiovisual and biomedical library with internet and tele-medicine capabilities
